I can’t believe my second novel, Where Fat Girls Haven’t Gone, was published twenty years ago. TWENTY years. I know people who weren’t even born then.
In 2004, the world saw people who live in bigger bodies as lazy and undisciplined, no matter how likeable or endearing their personalities. Despite some great reviews and a ton of support from friends and family, I don’t think the world was ready for the sass and moxie of lead character, Giletta Montrose.
Now, here we are in 2024. Old Navy carries plus size clothes in the store. Health at Every Size is a powerful movement. We admire Chrissy Metz, buy tickets for Lizzo concerts and applaud Da’Vine Joy Randolph as she accepts her Oscar. Yes, there are those in bigger bodies who decided, for whatever their reasons, to lose weight - Oprah, Melissa McCarthy and Rebel Wilson come to mind.
What I choose to focus on is that even though size is still a barrier in many ways, steps toward acceptance have been taken.
To celebrate that, and the 20th Anniversary of Where Fat Girls Haven’t Gone, I’m releasing an updated version via bi-weekly Subtacks beginning July 3!! Every Wednesday and Saturday you’ll get to see behind the scenes of the realty show Where Fat Girls Haven’t Gone.
Here’s the synopsis:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Plus-sized actress Giletta Montrose is thrilled when she lands a gig to host a new reality show called Where Fat Girls Haven't Gone. While enjoying the show's weekly stunts - kayaking around the New York Harbor, starring in a music video and playing competitive sports - Giletta learns to navigate the broad egos, intricate politics and fake friendships she encounters.
Ecstatic to finally be in front of the camera, Giletta is not as surprised as everyone else when the show becomes a hit. But with success lighting her path, she can no longer ignore her dream to grace the boards of Broadway and must choose between following her heart or her bank account.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Portioned in easily-digestible pieces, you’ll be thrown into Giletta’s world where I’d venture to guess you’ll see yourself regardless of body size.

It may sound crazy, but I’m sharing this with no expectations of financial remuneration. I love Giletta. She’s my inner drag queen. And I want to share her with you. The paid subscription offer isn’t even turned on - although this writer does love coffee if you catch my drift!
I’m also working on a top secret follow-up story that I hope will interest you after you read how she got started twenty years earlier.
